Advocacy, Inc.'s Deaf Advocacy Project
Advocacy, Inc. receives funding from Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundation to provide legal advocacy services for people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Advocacy, Inc.'s goal is to advocate for improved access to public and private services throughout Texas for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
People who are deaf or hard of hearing often face many communication barriers when they try access community services. With this in mind, the Deaf Advocacy Project (DAP) coordinator, Faye Kuo, is targeting activities designed to improve access to community services by people who are deaf or hard of hearing such as legal, mental health, and other public and private agencies and business services throughout Texas.
Three basic services are provided by the Advocacy, Inc. Deaf Mental Health Advocacy Project:
- Outreach, Education and Training Services: Workshops are available to the deaf community about private mental health services and services provided through MHMR and how to access them. Deaf awareness and sensitivity training will be conducted for targeted MHMR centers across the state and for other people who provide mental health services to deaf. For more information concerning training available and other services, please contact Faye Kuo via e-mail at:fkuo@advocacyinc.org or by fax (512)323-0902.
- Information, Materials, & Referral (IMR): Advocacy, Inc. intake services are handled by its five regional offices, primarily through our toll free number by using TDDs and face to face meetings. You can call us, toll free when you want information or have problems accessing MHMR or mental health services.
- Case Advocacy Services/Technical Assistance: Case management and direct advocacy services are also provided on a statewide basis to assist deaf and hard of hearing people who have problems accessing mental health services.
When a person breaks a leg, they need to see doctors to help fix it so they can become well again. Sometimes people, including deaf or hard of hearing people, need mental health services for behavior or emotional problems to help become well. Maybe you know someone who needs mental health services, but cannot get them from MHMR or other mental health providers. We want to help deaf or hard of hearing people access mental health services. In Texas, if you or a friend have problems like this, please call our toll free number 1(800)252- 9108 V/TDD or by calling (512)454-4816 V/TDD.
Together we can advocate improved mental health services for all deaf and hard of hearing people.
