Priorities — Housing, Employment, Accessibility & Transportation

Fiscal Year 2008 Through 2010 (October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2010)

SUBJECT AREA 1
Housing

Our vision is that individuals with disabilities are able to rent or own homes and apartments in the community.

  1. Public and private landlords, and others covered by law, comply with the laws requiring them to rent or sell to individuals with disabilities, to design and construct accessible new housing, to make or allow architectural modifications to existing housing, and to make reasonable accommodations or modifications to policies so that accessible and affordable housing becomes widely available to people with physical and mental disabilities.
  2. Accessible and affordable housing is widely available to individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

SUBJECT AREA 2
Employment

Our vision is that all individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to work.

  1. Individuals with disabilities are competitively employed.
  2. Employers do not discriminate against individuals because of their disabilities.

SUBJECT AREA 3
Access to Government & Private Businesses

Our vision is that individuals with disabilities have full access to all facilities, programs, and services of government, including voting, as well as private businesses.

  1. Governmental entities, entities receiving governmental funds (including community colleges, universities and trade schools), private professional offices, and large businesses comply with the architectural, programmatic and service accessibility requirements, including effective communication, under federal and state law.
  2. The Secretary of State, county election officials and election officials of other political subdivisions, comply with the Help America Vote Act. (HAVA)
  3. Individuals with disabilities can easily register and cast a vote, have accessible polling places, and get help in filing complaints if they experience barriers to voting. (HAVA)

SUBJECT AREA 4
Transportation

Our vision is that public and private transportation meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Public transportation authorities (including paratransit) and systems, and private transportation companies meet their obligations for accessible transit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and their obligations under the Air Carriers Access Act.
